Advancing Filipino Ingenuity through the Protection of Innovation: PCCI Alfredo M. Yao Intellectual Property (AMY IP) Awards 2022 Recognizes Filipino Inventors

The PCCI conferred this year’s grand winners of the Alfredo M. Yao Intellectual Property (AMY IP) Awards 2022 at the 48th Philippine Business Conference and Exposition (48th PBC&E) last October 19 at the Manila Hotel.

 

Andrew Cabiles, Karla Mae Cornelio, Jeremiah Magallanes, Cindy Meneses, and Nancy Espartinez from the Bicol University bagged the grand prize for the collegiate category with their invention called, “Organic Animal Feed Peller”.

 

The Organic Peller an ecological solid waste management project that utilizes agricultural wastes such as pili pulp, coconut meal, azolla and madre de agua as primary ingredients for organic animal feed pellets.  These agricultural residues, which are considered left-over agro-wastes, are rich in bioactive compounds and could still be used as alternative feed ingredients to the production of organic animal feed pellets.

 

Jeremy De Leon, founder of Jeremake, was hailed as the grand winner for the professional category for his innovation called, “Make-roscope: A Portable Microscope for Mobile Device”.

 

The Make-roscope unlocks the microscopic world by placing it on top of a smartphone’s front camera.  A sample slide is then placed on top of the magnifying lens and the front camera is turned on by the user so that they may be able to view the sample.

 

Now in its 13th year, the award recognizes inventors, entrepreneurs, and students who contribute to the development of innovative and new creative products and services that make doing business productive and economical.

Benjamin Mirasol; Chief Country Representative of the Philippines of US-ASEAN Business Council, Ms. Elizabeth Crebassa; Assistant-Secretary for Human Resources Management of Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Dr. Diana Ignacio; Deputy Director-General of Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL), Atty. Teodoro Pascua; Chairman of Bamboo Exchange Inc., Rodolfo Pelayo; National Chairman of Filipino Inventors Society, Juanito Simon; Assistant Secretary General of PCCI Advocacy, Research and Corporate Communications Department, Rhuby Conel; Corporate Secretary of PCCI, Atty. Pablo Gancayco; and Former Deputy General of Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL), Atty. Ricardo Blancaflor.

 

The Awards received sixty applications nationwide, out of which the PCCI Intellectual Property Committee and the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) shortlisted fifteen finalists using patentability and commercial viability as main criteria.

 

The invention called, “Production of Kraft Paper from Goosegrass (Eleusine Indica) for Corrugated Paperboard Grade” from the Adamson University was runner-up in the collegiate category.  “AI4MAPPING – A System and Method to Create Vegetation Maps from Satellite Images Using Dynamic Time Warping; System and Method of Feature Detection in Satellite Images Using Neural Networks” from the Department of Science and Technology’s Advanced Science and Technology Institute (DOST-ASTI) was the runner-up in the professional category.

 

The AMY IP Awards named after one of the most successful businessmen in the Philippines, and the very first recipient of the ASEAN Business Award’s Outstanding Innovation Award, Mr. Alfredo M. Yao of Zest-o Corporation.  The AMY IP Awards aims to strengthen intellectual property awareness as a significant component of business development and innovation.
