The Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) has tapped incubator/accelerator Startup Village (SUV) for the utilization phase of its satellite internet project that is expected to help micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), local government units, and public schools to jumpstart their digitalization journey.

PCCI President George T. Barcelon said that PCCI, in partnership with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and private sector satellite service internet providers are set to install internet via satellite in six pilot areas in the country that are currently unserved or underserved areas by legacy telecom and internet service providers.

“We are happy that the DICT has agreed to collaborate with us in pilot testing this satellite project. I am certain that this would help bridge the gap between the connected and unconnected Filipinos, especially those in the provinces where access to the internet remains a challenge,” Barcelon said.

Perry Ferrer, director for PCCI Innovation Committee, said that the partnership with DICT and Startup Village will certainly give more opportunities to MSMEs and students in remote areas that could not be reached by the internet.

“We want mentors who will help MSMEs and students to transition into the digital world. MSMEs in the remote areas should be able to showcase their products nationally and then later on, globally,” Ferrer said.

Startup Village President Mr. Carlo Calimon shared some support mechanisms that they could provide MSMEs such as mentorship in their digital transition, access to finance, and access to markets. They could also link EduTech startups to public schools, as well as healthcare startups to local clinics.

“We need to propel local startups as MSMEs and startups cannot live without the other. While COVID has pushed us towards digitalization, MSMEs are still apprehensive and we need to educate them forward,” he said.

Startup Village’s programs are seen to complement PCCI’s mission to help MSMEs grow their business by expanding their market reach and improving their productivity.
