The Department of Land Transportation assured the business community that the government will not increase transport-logistics-related fees to generate revenue as it would only be passed on to the commuting public.
In a courtesy visit held recently by the officers of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) to DOTr Secretary Jaime Bautista, he said that the DOTr will be more prudent on proposals to increase fees and would rather focus its direction on finding ways to deliver an accessible, affordable, comfortable, convenient, and safe for all rail, land, and marine transportation system.
Baustista also shared the agency’s commitment to continue and finish the transport-infrastructure projects that are already in the pipeline of Build. Build. Build Program for railway, road, seaport and airport. These include, among others, the Metro Manila Subway, LRT 1 extension, maintenance of MRT 3, MRT 7, North-South Commuter Railway of PNR, EDSA Busway, and completion of airports in Sangley and Bulacan.
Furthermore, to address the traffic congestion and commuters’ plight, the DOTr Secretary shared the agency’s plan to reduce the headway of EDSA Carousel, construct greenways, and implement route rationalization and fleet management program with the help of technology.
In the same meeting, PCCI President George T. Barcelon presented to Bautista the PCCI’s strategic agenda on infrastructure, transport and logistics, and vowed to support the new administration in its programs and advocacies that would benefit the country. --- Jeanne Aramae Cruz, Joanna Paula Pascual
