The PCCI’s Transportation and Logistics Committee headed by director, Mr. Michael G. Tan held its first meeting to discuss the committee’s work plan for 2022-2023.

Providing direction to the committee, Mr. Tan noted the importance of transport and logistics as any development that impacts on the sector significantly influences commodity prices.

Echoing his remarks, Mr. Barcelon pointed out how the COVID-19 pandemic, the Suez Canal blockage and the lingering challenge on the capacity of container yards and cargo space at the ports have all contributed to ports congestion, the disruption of supply chains and the rising costs of goods in the country.

Moving forward, the committee agreed to intensify PCCI’s advocacies for trade-facilitating measures/regulations at the ports both for domestic and international cargoes, streamlining cargo handling and effectively lowering logistics costs.  The centerpiece of the committee’s advocacy would be to steer the government from being revenue-centric to focus more on process efficiency.

Mr. Barcelon encouraged the committee, whose officers include industry leaders and experts, to become the consultative partner of government in ensuring the smooth flow of supply chains through a competitive logistics sector.  He underscored the importance of the PCCI, through the leadership of the Transport and Logistics Committee, to guide the incoming administration in crafting business-friendly policies and programs to improve the country’s transport and logistics sector.

Rounding-up the committee are Mr. Mr. Christian Gonzalez of ICTSI as chair for Ports Operations, Mr. Agapito Capsitrano of TMS Shipping as chair for Shipping, Mr. Pierre Carlo Curay of the Supply Chain Management Association of the Philippines as Chair for Supply Chain Management, and Dr. Henry Basilio as committee Adviser. --- Jeanne Aramae Cruz
