The Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) and the UP-CIFAL recently launched a leadership program to train Philippine companies, especially small enterprises, on the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in their operation.  Apart from promoting sustainability, the integration of SDG is fast becoming a requirement in the value chains of large corporations.  Business, especially the small ones, should be prepared for this eventuality.

Dubbed The SDGs4Biz: A Leadership Program on Sustainable Development Goals for Transformational Domestic and Export Enterprises, the program is participated in initially by 50 industry leaders and business executives from South Luzon and the National Capital Region (NCR).  It will run from November until December 15, 2022.  The target number of participants for the two batches under the first run of this course is 200.

PCCI President George T. Barcelon underscored the importance of educating business enterprises, particularly the MSMEs on the principles of the SDGs and how compliance can provide opportunities and new market trends for businesses to take on while contributing to the 2030 objective of leaving no one behind.

“Frankly, there is a need to intensify the awareness campaign on SDG and PCCI, together with UP-CIFAL and with the support of the Export Development Council (EDC), has started implementing SDG activities to capacitate our members and make them informed of the benefits and opportunities of SDG,” Barcelon said.

He stressed that the activity provides participants with the tool to guide them as they recover from the disruptions brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic and navigate around a revitalized and resilient Philippine economy.

The program has two components (1) Professional Course on SDGs for Transformational Business and the (2) IDEATHON Transformational Business Strategy.  It promotes how the private sector can integrate the 17 SDGs into their transformational business blueprint and export development strategies, consequently contributing to building a better economy.

At the end of the course, participants will have a working knowledge of how domestic and export enterprises could adopt or translate the SDGs into their industry plans, ethics, and operation. The extensive course uses a combination of blended and learner-centered approaches through synchronous and asynchronous learning methods.

This course is part of the continuing information campaign and activities of the PCCI SDG Committee which has seen concrete milestones such as the PCCI’s continuing tripartite agreement with TESDA and Alay Buhay Foundation, its membership in the NEDA Stakeholder Chamber and the UNDP Integrated National Financing Framework.
