A Qatari company, Baladna is set to establish a USD500 million integrated and state-of-the-art dairy facility in the country. The project requires a minimum 5,000 ha of land for forage, dairy farm, and processing facilities. Baladna is looking at Eastern Pangasinan as project site.
At the Investment Pitching Session organized by the PCCI’s Agriculture Committee, Aidan Tynan, head of overseas expansion and independent board member of Baladna, disclosed that the project could be set up in 18 months should all requirements be met and complied with, including having a local partner.
Tynan said that the facility is designed to be climate-independent using world-class management systems.
Dr. William Co, PCCI chairman and Agriculture Committee director, welcomed this initiative and vowed to assist the Department of Agriculture (DA) in looking for local partners.
“Over 90 percent of milk requirement is imported. This project could definitely help us achieve self-sufficiency in dairy because 100 percent of its production will all be for domestic consumption,” Co said.
Co was joined by other PCCI directors, namely PCCI President George T. Barcelon, Engr. Enunina Mangio, vice president for Regional Affairs; Alfredo M. Yao, director for Banking and Finance; Apolinar Aure, director for SME Committee; Jeffrey Ng, director; Sally Lacson, area vice president for South Luzon; and, Bernardo Benedicto, assistant treasurer. Also in attendance were Ruben See, president, Philippine Food Exporters (Philfoodex); Robert Chen, chair, PCCI Committee for Livestock and other PCCI members.
Baladna Qatar is the largest locally-owned food and dairy producer, supplying over 95 percent of the country’s fresh dairy products. The firm owns more than 24,000 Holstein cows in its 2.6 million square-meter facility with 40 state-of-the-art barns and could produce up to 450 tons of fresh milk and juice products on a daily basis.
The project is an initiative of the Department of Agriculture, through its Agriculture and Fisheries Industrialization & Development Program (DA-AIDPro) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). --- Donna Angulo
